Obtained from the Online Catalog of the Library of Virginia. Starting at the bottom of the left page and continuing to the right, this records a grant for a piece of land in Pittsylvania County to a James Poteet. This is odd, given that Pittsylvania County was officially formed in 1767. In fact, the river could not have been named before 1702, as it was an expedition in 1702 that gave it that name. Indeed, a review of the image shows that the meta-data below in incorrect. The correct year appears to be 1770, after Pittsylvania County was formed, but before Henry County was formed therefrom.
