This is a frequent mistake which seems to have originated from [[Source:Will of William Cox, Sr.|William Cox's Will]]. Other sources do not support the idea that Barthena is William Cox's immediate daughter, but is rather his granddaughter. |
| At the time of writing (20:21, 17 August 2014 (MST)) FamilySearch.org lists two Barthenas as being married to the Greenberry Cloud born in or around 1785. One is our Barthena Cox, born in 1769. The other is one Barthena Callums, noted as a daughter of Lucy Cox, who is recorded to be a daughter of William and Jemima Cox. In other words, this Barthena and a niece of the same name are listed. This Barthena is about 16 years older then Greenberry Cloud, which would seem unusual and improbable, while the niece is about 20 years younger, which also seems unusual, but less unlikely than the other. So, some review of our sources, and some further research is in order.

| One major source for the relationship as it has been recorded, is the [[Source:Will of William Cox, Sr.|Will of William Cox, Sr.]]. This will was recorded 17 Jan 1820 and includes the provision "To daughter Barthena Cloud Negro girl Luce and negro boy, Joe, during life of her husband Greenberry Cloud and my daughter". This would hold that in 1820, this Barthena Cox, and one Greenberry Cloud were married. If this was a granddaughter, however, it does not seem beyond the scope of imagination that it would still have been written like this. However, a careful reading reveals some ambiguity in how the will is expressed. On one line, William states, "To children of daughter Lucy Callums" and then this is not directly followed by any specific boon. Instead, the next line reads, "To sons John, Isaiah, and daughters Betsy, Polly, Nancy, and Barthena". This is also not followed by any specific boon, but instead is followed by separate lines for each of these individuals and details regarding what is left to them, including the line already cited regarding Barthena Cloud. I could read this as being a list of Lucy's children, which would then support the Barthena Callums version of this relationship.

| Another source for the relationship as recorded, the [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ccpp/pioneer/ Claiborne County Pioneer Project] lists two Barthena's married to a Greenberry Cloud. We have Barthena Cox, listed as being born about 1800, and one Barthena Cottrell, born Dec 1827. Barthena Cox could not be Barthena Callum, but it would seem possible that about 1800 was a bad guess and that the real birthdate is 1769. Overall, this seems to add more confusion, as, at the very least, we have yet another Barthena being matched up with a Greenberry Cloud. Looking up Greenberry Cloud is a mixed blessing, because we find 4 listings of at least 3 separate individuals. We have a 1785 Greenberry Cloud married to the Barthena Cox. (This does support our existing recorded relationship rather than the Callums relationship and undercuts the idea that Barthena is a Callums.) We also have a Greenberry Cloud born in 1822 married to the Barthena Cottrell. These both seem like better matches (based on age difference) than the one we have recorded. A third Greenberry Cloud, born in 1855 is not matched to a spouse, while the 4th listing does not give a birthdate, and lists a spouse of Elizabeth King. Our own record indicates that Barthena Cox and Greenberry Cloud had a son they named Greenberry Cloud (per http://genforum.genealogy.com/cox/messages/2650.html). This could explain the proliferation of Greenberry Clouds as 3 generations of the family. The birth dates certainly line up with such an explanation.

| I'm left wondering what sources led to their establishing this relationship. If their record was also influenced by the will, then could they have Barthena's surname and relationship wrong. I can't find any good record that provide for the birthdates I have either. 1769 may have come from someone else's unsourced genealogical data, and may be way off.

| An inquiry was sent regarding this issue and a response was received 25/Aug/2014 indicating that the source for information regarding Greenberry Cloud and Barthena Cox, as they have them was a person by the name of Nancy. The email address for bounced back my message, but I was able to get Nancy's full name, Nancy Bender, by googling the email address. Nevertheless, I haven't been able to find out much more about her.

| Our newest source is a probate record detailing the support left by one G B Cloud to Barthena Cloud. It doesn't really provide much help.

| A search of FamilySearch for Greenberry Cloud born between 1760 and 1800 with a spouse named Barthena (for the records I refer to, there was no spouse information, so this may be superfluous to mention), I found two results in the 1840 census in Claiborne County, Tennessee, plus one record in the 1820 census in Lee, County Virginia, which is where Greenberry and Barthena lived before moving to Tennessee.

| I would guess at this point that Barthena Cox is actually Barthena Callums and that the birth date as listed here is completely wrong. Probably it is actually about 1800.
