On the back of the photo is written "Rose Richardson" as well as "Texas". The handwriting resembles the handwriting of Dorothy Langdon Ivey.

It is presumed that the only female evident in the photo, then, is a young Rose Estelle Richardson and that the man standing beside her is then her father. The young man standing beside him then, could plausibly be Ernest Herbert Richardson. It is possible to imagine that Rose isn't in the photo at all. (Perhaps this is an occasion relating to her birth?)

One problem with the obvious interpretation is that if such were the case, we would expect to find the father's name written on the back of the photo as well, possibly along with Ernest's name.

Conspicuous in this photo is the large number of men, in contrast with the one little girl. Also, it is snowing and a few people are holding snowballs, as if to throw them, while others have placed snowballs on their hats. It is an unusually goofy picture for a time when photography was nowhere near as cheap and easy as it is today.

The large sign above the crowd has the word "FURNITURE" on it. (One can see a smaller sign on the far right, in the vertical middle, which appears to read as "...STE(V/N)EN'S FURNITURE")

Since the picture can be presumed to have been taken in Texas, the obvious implication is that the location is in or around San Marcos, Texas, where Rose was born.
